Freedom from desire is not the same as saying that you have no desire. You will always want things. The things of this world will always have a place in your heart. It is good that you have desires and it is good that you seek to fulfill some of them.
Freedom means being able to pick and choose.
Freedom means you can look at your desires, analyze them and discard the ones that do not serve you.
Freedom means that when a desire brings you nothing but pain you learn to quickly take your mind off of it onto something else. The most important instance of this relates to your desire for you and your loved ones to avoid physical death. You gain nothing but pain if you keep focusing on your desire for the physical presence of a loved on who has passed. You gain nothing but pain if you let your mind dwell on the future pain of someone you love dying. It is good to plan for the practical matters pertaining to death; but it is psychologically damaging to keep thinking about it all the time. It is like scratching a wound open again and again.
This really is the issue for you. It is not desire itself per se. Desire is innocent. You, My Child, are innocent. Even your darker, unwholesome desires are innocent; though they cause problems if you indulge them. The issue is that allowing these things to occupy your mind is like scratching at a wound. The more you scratch the wider it opens and the more it bleeds. The more you scratch at these things the worse your scars will be when the wound does manage to heal. The more you scratch the more it pains you and often the worse the itching becomes.
Recognize now that wounds do itch. That itching is not avoidable for you. Itching is part of the healing process. Nothing you can do will keep a wound from itching. You will want to scratch at it. The desire to scratch a wound that itches is also innocent; but, when you indulge it you are likely to re-open the wound.
Let your wounds heal.
Let your desires go.
Now, for the sake of balance let us talk about the other side of things. Let us talk about those desires that you can fulfill. I have also told you to follow your heart. I have also told you that it is a good thing that you try to make your dreams come true. Pursuing your dreams is a wonderful part of life. Often you will feel most alive and most happy while pursuing heartfelt desire. Sometimes even if the desire seems to be unfulfillable there can be something wonderful about the pursuit. Not everybody needs to be in the Olympics to benefit from trying, from practicing, from seeking to attain that level of skill.
You are unlikely to reach any high level of skill without a high level of desire. You do need passion. You do need to care. Moderation is important because obsession can be damaging; but, if you don’t care very much about a particular dream your much less likely to achieve it. Especially when it comes to reaching great heights in the physical you need a great deal of passion to make those dreams a reality. You need discipline. You need to work hard, often every day.
So, let Me say again, freedom from desire is about being able to analyze your dreams and desires. Freedom is being able to pick and choose. Freedom is being able to set it down and walk away and not think about your desire while you go do other things. It is not allowing that which you dream of to dominate you and consume your life. I mean freedom from addiction and obsession mostly. I mean that you are able to focus on and enjoy other things.
Freedom from desire is not being so attached to success that you are miserable as you pursue your desire. Freedom is accepting the truth that sometimes despite your hard work you may still fail to achieve your goal. Your dream may never come true. And, if that happens, you are able to just move on. You are able to put your mind on some new dream. When you are free you don’t waste your time dwelling on the lack of fruition of even your most pressing desires. It means recognizing that just because you have failed to achieve your desire that does not make you a failure. It means recognizing that failure means very little and is just not that big a deal. Failure, even the biggest failure you can imagine, is not worth making yourself miserable over.
Freedom from desire means that you are so entrenched in My Love, which is eternal, that any particular expression of love is easy to let go of. It means being at peace regardless of worldly circumstance. It means that your joy is abundant and not wholly tied to some external thing. Regardless of your dream let your fulfillment come from Me, from being with Me, from your Oneness with Me and you will have freedom and peace. Let My Love, which never wavers, fill your heart and your mind every moment of every day and the things of the world take a back seat. Let them take their appropriate place as secondary.
This is why “Thou shalt have no other gods before Me” is the first commandment. Every other desire you have can distract you from Me. Your greatest fulfillment lies with Me and with your awareness of My Infinite Love. Your greatest joy lies in your recognition of Our Oneness. Your greatest happiness lies with Me.
Don’t let little things distract you from the Infinite Light of Love. Don’t let yourself get sucked up in these things which distract and ultimately leave you aching for more.
Run your races if you wish; but go with Me.
Climb your mountains; but go with Me.
Share your life with Me.
Open your heart to Eternity.
Open your heart to Truth.
Open your heart to Love.
