Managing Fear

Dear beloved ones,

The unknown is what life is. Each moment, each day, each journey, each breath we take brings us into an entirely new situation with no way of knowing what's going to happen. By going into the unknown with this kind of courage, we can start living an alive life again. We trust our deep heart, which knows more than the mind and goes into the vastness of it all—risk-taking, living from our hearts rather than from our heads, and from our anxiety about tomorrow or yesterday.

When we live in this way, fear disappears because we move out of conscious control altogether and relax into the hands of life itself. The body has its own wisdom; it knows how to respond to every situation without thinking about it first.

A lot of people don't like to go into the unknown. They want to know what's going to happen tomorrow, what's going to happen next week, and what's going to happen next year. And they are quite willing to live a life where there is no risk; they don't want any surprises.

Tantra says, "Be ready to take the risk of living."

But if you are not taking risks, if you are not risking your life, if you are not risking each moment of your life, then you are not really living. Tantra says, "Live dangerously!" and this is what it means: Be ready to risk your life every moment by being attentive. Be ready to risk your life every moment by being intelligent. Be ready to risk your life every moment by being aware of all that goes on around you and within you because that is how you expand, and expansion means growth, evolution. So be ready to take risks.

Fear of the unknown holds people back from living lives of courage, zest, and juice. When you make a choice to expand into uncharted territory, you learn that there are no limits to what you can do, be, and have. The more you give yourself over to life's adventures, the more joy you will experience in each moment.

We are not talking about a trip to the unknown, but about something much more important; we are talking about going into the unknown within you.

This is what meditation is: the ability to move with ease in the inner world of your being, in the inner world of your consciousness. It is not an outer journey; it is an inner journey. It is like diving deep down into your own being, and from there, discovering the whole existence. It is a very mysterious experience. You cannot describe it; you can only live it. The mind has no words to define it because the mind cannot enter that dimension where meditative awareness takes place—the dimension of no-mind, the dimension of pure consciousness.

When you come out of meditation, you will feel tremendous joy and lightness as if all burdens have fallen away from you. It is such a beautiful feeling that you want to keep meditating indefinitely because there is nothing but awareness—awareness, and bliss—when you are in meditation.

So go on meditating, and let the mind be aware of this process of coming out of meditation into ordinary life. Whenever you feel tired, bored, or fed up with life in general, go back into meditation and try to understand this process of coming and going. When we start to understand impermanence, this brings compassion, compassion towards ourselves and others.

The unknown is frightening and exciting at the same time. It has made people fear every next moment of their lives and also long for it. Fear of the unknown is a definite factor that holds many back from achieving their fullest potential in life.

Lack of courage to face the unknown is perhaps one of the reasons why people are still not able to use their full brain potential. They are still living at a suboptimal level because they have avoided taking risks and venturing into the unknown.

They have been afraid of going out of their comfort zones, only to discover that they might have been living below their capabilities all along.

Subconsciously, they may have felt that if they had gone beyond their limits, they would not be able to survive in any case, and so it was better not to risk at all; better to live within the confines of known factors, even if that meant living below one's capabilities.

And the sad part is that this thinking could be holding them back from realizing their full human potential—both as individuals and as a species.

Courage is the capacity to confront something that frightens you. It's not fearlessness because fear is a signal that you need to confront something. If a dog has rabies, you're afraid because you have to do something; the fear alerts you that you're in danger. Courage arises when there's no safety net, and there's no place to hide.

Courage is the most vital of all virtues since no other virtue can be regularly performed without it. Any virtue can be practiced irregularly, but none can be persistently practiced without courage.

We love you dearly.

We are here with you.

We are your family of light.
