Simply list the criteria of what you envisage building in the future Add the size and materials needed and find a Printer to suit those needs:
For me the Reprap is a large 3D Printer base with Heated base to take expansion in both materials  as well most importantly for new technology hitting this fastest of growing market places:

The above 2 pictures show Multi head extruders ( Multi Head for colours ) Whilst I do not recommend complicating your 3D priniting machine  with Multi heads So much, It is worth Noting that Your selection should be accommodating for at least TWO Heated extrusion Heads in order to take on board the new Solar Panel makers of the future expected out in April 2014:
